The Art Of Decoy Carving

swd_stockphoto_78936409207737483Welcome to our section on Decoy Carving

When it comes to creating art work, and creating art work from a block of wood, this is real talent and a keen eye comes into play. For years there have been men and woman who have perfected this art, and who have given their life to creating the most beautiful and most elegant carvings that are seen throughout the world, and these works of art should not go un-noticed.

It is hard to believe that all this starts from a block of wood, carving tools and a whole lot of time. It does seem that nowadays people are getting more and more detailed than ever before, and if you've seen some of the carvings on display at the many decoy shows across the country, you can truly appreciate the complexity of how much time goes into each project.  It isn’t just about just sitting on the water anymore either.   These great works of art can be found in living rooms and offices around the world, and here at “The Pit Blind” we want to show case some of these carvings for others to enjoy.

If you are a carver and would like to submit your carving for display here at The Pit Blind, please use the contact page and submit your information and we will be in touch with you. All carvings images must be of high quality imaging, and be at least 800 pix in width. All images must be your own work and have a short story about it, and what inspired you to create such a work of art.

All Images are protected under this websites strict copyright law! No images that are submitted can be used without permission from this site or the photographer of the image.  All images within this website are stock free images, and property of this website.

Chris Toy

christroyMy name is Chris Toy; I was born and raised near the town of Sherrett in rural Armstrong County Pennsylvania, not far from the Allegheny River. A lot of my time during my youth was spent fishing the river for walleye and smallmouth bass and hunting for deer and various small game throughout the surrounding countryside. My early hunting career focused mainly on rifle hunting for deer and chasing rabbits with beagles alongside my father and grandfather. Later on in my teens I got very heavily involved in archery, both hunting and tournament shooting.

My introduction to waterfowl hunting came later on in life after the company I was working for offered me another position near New Castle, PA. Wile attending Church one Sunday morning I got to talking to one of the church members and the discussion turned to hunting, he mentioned that he was a waterfowl hunter and offered to take me along. I accepted the offer and have been addicted ever since.

Jim Arky

arkyjim3My interest in decoys and carving came in 1971 at my first duty station as a pilot at NAS Brunswick, Maine. While stationed there, I lived in nearby Freeport, known worldwide as the home of mail order giant L.L. Bean. Leon Leonwood Bean himself, the firm’s founder, was an avid sportsman who often went hunting with the company’s decoy supplier, George Soule.
