Just wondering what is the best color, or mix of colors for a Black Duck's Head? I know the body is umber and blue, and the bill is ochre and I think a blue in my notes. However the head color escapes me. Anyone want to share their recipe?
Several Pit Blind members as well as a couple others got together with the WoodWizard, Jim Romig, for some carving lessons yesterday. Nice to meet you guys and look forward to the next session. Was trying to put some color on my Barrow's heads and was having a little trouble. I was pointed toward a powder interference "stuff" to mix with paint. Kinda neat because you can mix it into any color and get traces of the interference color in anything. When I did my swap bird I tried to come up with a method that achieved results I was happy with. While I found a happy resolve, I was concerned that duplicating it on the 2 I still needed to paint would be hard to do. Well last night I was messing around with it and it just wasn't going well. Was getting thick clumpy looking paint, rather then a nice smooth finish. Not really sure what made me do it, but I dabbled my brush into a little paint thinner and wiped it over the top of the already painted head. Suddenly all the "thick" stuff smoothed out and the interference color just seemed to blend in. Surprised by how easy it was, I proceeded
Working on my bufflehead I had the white, brown and gray turn get purple spots on it. I had thought that I had it on my hand and accidently tranfered it on it it, but I didn't. it appeared after I put on Jo Sonjas matte finish on it, it was the first time that I used the matte finish, so I touched it up and sprayed it with dull coat and it reappeared. I also noticed that it was the first time that I used chrome sable and it seened to be the color that the purple was coming from. It may be bleeding thru or having a adverse reaction. Has anyone else here experience this. The only purple that I used was on the head. It is a little upsetting when you put in many hours and have your decoy turn purple.
